My Top Dozen Favorite Horror/SciFi/Fantasy Movies

1. Silent Hill- I don’t think I’ve actually ever met anybody who has really liked this movie, but I love it. All of the freaky characters are very original and do the job of scaring the audience. The plot is filled with anticipation and nerve as the story goes through different eerie scenes. The dark lighting and deranged characters really add to the horrifying mood.

2. Alice- Alice was the SciFi channel’s original depiction of Alice in Wonderland, except it is set in the present time. I love how they used the original story line and completely turned it into a futuristic version. The Queen of Heart’s castle is a high-tech shiny casino and the white rabbit is a face-less robot. It is a great interpretation.

3. 28 weeks later- This movie is both gruesome and thrilling. The blood red eyed zombies are horrifying and add to the suspense. How desperately the characters try to survive from the zombies engages the audience and pulls them into the movie. I’m not one for gore and guts, but this movie makes it hard to look away.

4. Never Ending Story- This was my favorite childhood movie, and still never gets old. The desperate fight against The Nothing is both symbolic and moving. I still manage to squeeze out a few tears every time the Swamp of Sadness engulfs the horse. The ending of Fantasia being blown to pieces is not a common one for a children’s movie, and that is what adds to its charm. At the end, you can’t help but be grateful for Bastian screaming the Empresses name (which now as I look back, is sort of a silly ending.)

5. The Princess Bride- The Princess Bride is yet another one of my favorite childhood movies. Who doesn’t love a great love story? A thrilling tale of lovers separated by so much. From Andre the Giant to the R.O.U.S’s, this movie keeps you hanging on until the end.

6. The Island- This twisted plot is unlike any I’ve seen before; and that is why it makes its way to The Dozen. This movie is filled with shocking twists. The Island never ceases to surprise you and will have you hanging at the edge of your seat to find out what comes next.

7. Totoro- This is just an over-all uplifting film. Watching this will make you feel like a child again. The character Totoro is one of my favorite movie characters of all time. When I was younger, I would watch this movie practically every week with my neighbors.

8. Princess Mononoke- The graphics in this movie are unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. I’ve always been a fan of Hayao Miyazaki’s masterpieces, this is just something else. The little white nature spirits with crackling heads are a brilliant character that really adds to the film.

9. Kiki’s Delivery Service- My dad and I were always quite fond of this movie because of the black cat. We have 2 black cats, Riley and Bootey. We always sense of pride in our black cats while watching this movie and got a good laugh out of it.

10. Spirited Away- This movie just tears at my heart-strings. After seeing this movie, I actually had dreams that I was in the scenes. It was quite strange actually; but if a movie makes its way into your dreams, you know it’s good.

11. I am Legend- I will never be able to listen to Bob Marley again without thinking of this movie. After having a German Shepherd, I cannot help but cry every time Robert must kill his dog, the only thing he has left. This movie is truly moving and displays a great and noble hero.

12. Big Fish- Big Fish is by far my favorite movie. Ewan McGregor is one of my favorite actors, and does a great job in this movie. I love every single part of the story line. Every character appeals to the audience and makes you feel a connection to them.
