twisted tales

I always loved her. Since I first laid eyes on her. Her long blonde hair, her blue dress, her high socks and black shoes. She was perfect. She was mine. What do you think, I’m fucking crazy? This stupid white rabbit can’t love? Yeah, that’s what they all think. But I can. I can love. I have loved. I do love. I loved so much it took over me, it controlled my life. And look at me now. I know you’re judging me. I know you’ve read the news papers; crazed white rabbit, under the influence, murderer. But I did it for her! It was all for her! It was always for HER!! Count to ten rabbit. Deep breaths. You all look at me with your judging eyes, but you’ll never know what I went through and what I did for her. For Alice.
It all started when the Queen asked me to pick up her shipment of flamingos from across the rabbit hole. I had just come through and there she was, standing there, wide eyed. She was a vision. She began to call after me, “White Rabbit! Oh, White Rabbit!” I still remember it like it was yesterday. I can say very confidently that it was love at first sight. I hid in the bushes thinking of how I could get her back to Wonderland. I hopped back out and she started to chase after me, it was the perfect plan. I loved the feeling of her chasing after me. I worried that as soon as I went through the rabbit hole she would give up and turn around, but she didn’t. She followed me all the way back to Wonderland. I finally had her, she would be mine.
For some time after this I watched her as she made her way through Wonderland. I purchased a camera from the Cheshire Cat and began to take some pictures of her. What, does that sound strange to you? You think I’m fucking crazy? Well I’m not. I loved her. I wanted to have her with me at all times. All times. I put up the pictures in what used to be my spare room. They covered the walls, along with news paper articles about a strange girl adventuring Wonderland, and plans scribbled about our future. I never wanted to be without her. On a Tuesday I got a camera developed from her day with the Tweedles. That was when I saw how Tweedle Dum looked at her. I went into rage. I tore up the pictures of their day and burned them to ash. She was mine! Nobody else’s! Then, I went after him, but I won’t go into details. The next day the newspapers read: Tweedle Dum found brutally murdered in the Tulgey Wood, but no one suspected me. Why would they? I’m just a little innocent white rabbit who works for the Queen, I would never do such a thing. Later that week Bill the Lizard from down the street dropped by to check the new straw on my roof. He noticed that I seemed off.
“You can tell me Rabbit. I’ve known you for 35 years now. Come on, what is it?” I explained to him that I was in love. I didn’t dare tell him who though. I explained how hard it was loving her, how much I wanted to be with her, and how it killed me to see her with other people. Bill set a plastic bag filled with white powder on the table. “Snort this, you’ll feel like a million bucks.”
And that started it all. After that day I began using the white powder nearly every opportunity I could. And, I did feel like a million bucks. I knew that with this special powder I could do anything, I could win Alice.
The following week I was sitting in her room, admiring the recent pictures of her day with the flowers. She looked beautiful. All of the sudden I heard someone outside. It was her. This was my chance. I quickly snorted some white powder and ran down stairs.
“White Rabbit! Oh, White Rabbit! Is that you?” My heart skipped a beat hearing her speak my name.
I asked her if she would like to come inside for some tea, and she agreed. She was in my house, sitting on my sofa, drinking out of my tea cups. I made a note to keep that tea cup. It was all too good to be true. We got to talking about her adventures, who she had met so far, and her sadness due to the loss of Tweedle Dum. This angered me, but I put it aside. I couldn’t blow my chances now. I moved in closer to her and put my hand on her thigh. She politely moved away and smiled.
“What, I can’t touch you? I brought you here! If it weren’t for me you wouldn’t even be here right now! And I can’t even touch you?” I stood up and threw the table to the floor.
“Rabbit you’re scaring me! I’m sorry I just don’t feel that way. You’re a great friend and I’m so glad you brought me here but I- I’m sorry… you’re a rabbit!”
I got up and screamed at her to get the hell out of my house. She left, tears in her eyes. I wanted so badly to run out there, wipe away her tears, tell her of how much I loved her and how I never meant to scare her. But it was too late, she was gone. I snorted my 6th line of white powder that day and proceeded towards the Queen’s castle. If I couldn’t have Alice, then nobody could. And I would make sure of that.
“Why are you here Rabbit?” the Queen questioned.
“It’s about Alice. Well your majesty, she was just at my house. She told me horrible things! She said that she has come to Wonderland with the intentions of stealing your thrown!”
“Your nose is bleeding, Rabbit.”
“Oh, sorry. Well, as your adviser and dear friend I think it is best to do away with that infiltrator. That back stabbing whore, that heart breaking wench, that”
“Rabbit.”
The Queen agreed that it was in her best interest to behead Alice, so she could continue to rule Wonderland without any difficulties. I knew that if she lived, she would continue to haunt me, continue to torment me, continue to not deny me. I knew that I could be with her in another life, Rabbit’s don’t live very long after all.
Don’t you see, I did this all for her! It was for us, for our life together! No one will ever love her like I do. No one will ever look at her the way I do. No one! Why should anybody else have her? Why?! They fucking shouldn’t! That’s the answer. Look at me, no one will ever know what I went through. No one writes to me here. No one even visits me. Why would they? They just don’t understand. I did it all for her, for us, for Alice.

ORP stanzas 21-30

David's parents tell Tally about the operation,
It secretly makes a beautiful but dumb nation.
With the surgery lesions are put in the brain,
Making everybody stupid, not the same.

With this new truth Tally throws away the pendant.
It burns in a fire and she becomes independent.
She no longer wants to please Dr.Cable
She will not be fooled with her lies and fables.

What Tally did not know is what the fire could do.
It triggered the pendant and in the Specials flew.
Tally did not understand, she thought she was free
But she had no time, she could not flee.

The Specials burned down the entire Smoke
To them it seemed like an ugly joke.
They captured the Smokies and imprisoned them all
The Specials were not expecting the Smokies to brawl.

Tally is brought to Dr.Cable and tells a lie,
She makes her believe she's still a trusted spy.
But Tally is smart and says the necklace is hiding,
It just so happens that it's where the hover boards are lying.

Tally tricks the Special and gets the board,
And through the winding paths she soared.
The Species followed and tried to chase her down,
But they did not know the ways around the town.

Tally hides inside a cave of rocks,
And when she arrives she stands shocked.
David is there, hiding and scared,
They are so happy they are finally paired.

Tally and David return to the Smoke.
What they see makes them choke.
All is destroyed, buried in flames.
The Boss is dead due to the Specials games.

The two decide to check David's parent's place.
Inside their is not a trace.
David knows that his parent's were full of whit,
They search and find a survivor's kit.

Tally and David make a pact.
They will go to the city and bring the Smokies back.
It won't be easy, David only knows these parts,
But they must do it and get a head start.

The Raft, Nightcrawlers, Duel

Compare & Contrast: The Raft, Duel, Nightcrawlers
By: Maeve Norton

The Dark Fantasy genre is very appealing to many people. But let’s be honest, we’ve all read or seen our fair share of horrible, non-believable, totally out there Dark Fantasy stories. But what exactly makes a Dark Fantasy story good? The Raft by Steven King, Nightcrawlers by Robert McCammon and Duel by Richard Matheson are all examples of Dark Fantasy. The Raft is the perfect example of the genre, with Nightcrawlers falling closely behind it, and Duel coming in last as the worst example of Dark Fantasy.
The Raft tells the story of 4 teens spending a nice day out at a lake. What they don’t know is that an oil slick lake monster is hungry and lurking under the raft. One by one Randy watches as his 3 friends get sucked into the oil slick monster and he is left there stranded, alone and confused. This story is a perfect example of Dark Fantasy. Steven King’s use of the horrifying unknown is a great addition to the story, making it perfect for Dark Fantasy. The story is not only scary, but gruesome. King gives vivid descriptions of the teen’s fatal but questionable ends.
Nightcrawlers crawls right behind The Raft for the best Dark Fantasy story. During a crazy storm a young Vietnam vet with a special talent comes to a diner off the highway. When the people at the diner realize his talent, it is too late. Whatever the vet thinks of appears in front of him. But when he is knocked out his horrid memories of Vietnam come to life and attack the diner and everyone in it. After a man dies and others are deeply scared, they notice that the mysterious bullets vanish after being shot, leaving no evidence at the crime scene. This story is a good example of Dark Fantasy because the setting and mood. The story starts out during a crazy storm on a diner way out in the middle of nowhere. When the vet enters, he creates a very eerie and dark mood through his stories and his hidden talent. But the mysterious Nightcrawlers are really what make the story. Their vanishing bullets and ghostly soldiers are the perfect mix of fantasy and horror. The vivid description of the diner being attacked is so well written that you can really picture everything happening in your head, and it’s believable.
Coming in last is Duel by Richard Matheson. Depending on your taste, this story has no elements of fantasy in it. Sure, if you’re petrified of angry drivers then I suppose this could have a tiny hint of fantasy, but for the most part it is a poor example of Dark Fantasy. When a young salesman is driving along a highway, he steps into a strange road competition with an irrational truck driver. Soon, he realizes that the truck driver’s intention is not only to scare him, but to kill him. Though the plot does apply to the Dark genre, there are no elements of Fantasy. It is about road rage, which is a very common realistic thing. I would not place this story in the Dark Fantasy genre. I would say it belongs in the horror genre or a drivers-ed book.
The Raft by Steven King, Nightcrawlers by Robert McCammon and Duel by Richard Matheson are all great short stories, some fitting in to the Dark Fantasy genre more than others. To make a good Dark Fantasy story you must incorporate many elements of fantasy that cause the reader to be scared and frightened. The Raft and Nightcrawlers displayed that perfectly, with Duel being the least befitting.

Pan's Labyrinth: movie review

Pan’s Gruesome yet Fantastic Labyrinth
By: Maeve Norton

You know a movie is good when you’re hands are covering your eyes, but you can’t seem to look away. Peering through my fingers I was fascinated by Pan’s Labyrinth, and almost inspired to purchase some chalk and draw little portals in my own room. The plot and visual effects engage the viewer, but at times they go too far. Though the movie is hands down outstanding, it was a bit too violent and gruesome for my taste.
When little Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) and her mother travel to live with her new father, Captain Vidal (Sergi Lopez I Ayats), they are suddenly sent into a whirlwind of the Spanish revolution and a new way of life. Ofelia’s mother, Carmen (Ariadna Gil), is very sick with the generous, nice and dynamic character Captain Vidal’s child. That was a joke. The captain is so very far from being a good person that you can’t help but hating him from the very start of the movie. His lack of compassion and ability to be utterly horrifying makes ones stomach turn and shutter at his actions. When Ofelia arrives at her new home, she is fascinated by a fairy who leads her into a mysterious Labyrinth. There, she meets a duplicitous faun (Doug Jones) who tells her that she is the princess of an underground world. But accepting her throne isn’t all that easy, she must complete 3 tasks to prove that she is not a mortal. Ofelia’s journey is both deeply saddening and frightening.
Pan’s Labyrinth, like other Guillermo del Toro films, tells the story of a young child and their struggles in life not only due to fantasy elements but dictatorial rule. The reality of how horrible the Spanish Revolution was aids to believing the fantastic elements in the story by telling a real story and adding to it. Doug Jones might not look like the scariest in person, but done up as the Faun or Pale Man I would not want to cross paths with him. His body language in both of these roles is amazing and he makes the character very believable. He really dedicates himself to the role and taking the act all the way. Baquero and Gil both play the sad little puppy role so well. And no, that is not an insult. They really make you sympathize for them in a way so tastefully done. But I’d have to say that Sergi Lopez I Ayats steals the show as Captain Vidal. His performance is strong, flawless and so static. All of the acting was spectacular, even in Spanish. Though I couldn’t speak a word of Spanish if my life depended on it, the script and plot were intriguing and easy to understand. Like many of Guillermo’s films, such as The Hobbit and Hellboy, the story line is so intriguing following along is not a problem. The plot was done so well, that I think all of the violence was not even necessary to add to the movie. If it were a bit toned down it would be right on, but at times the violence was just a bit too much.
Though the overall script and story are jaw-dropping, the visual effects will make your jaw pop out legs and walk away. The use of dark colors during most of the film is outstanding and complements the mood. The greens of the forest and housing are breathtakingly beautiful. Every single aspect of the underground world is done so wonderfully with great attention to details. The faun, pale man and fairies are done with such originality and authenticity that you will be astounded
Looking away is hard to do when watching Pan’s Labyrinth, though at some points it’s hard not to. Nevertheless, this movie is definitely worth the language barrier and shockingly gruesome scenes. The plot is wide spread but pulled together perfectly from horror, fantasy, to historical fiction. Even if you need to watch it with your eyeballs stuck into your hands, it’s a must see.

The New Immortal

The New Immortal

By: Maeve Norton

“Hey you, come here.” I looked around for the woman calling me. “Over here,” she whispered. I walked towards the mysterious figure. “Come on, I don’t bite,” she said with a smile from the corner of her lips. I felt myself being drawn closer to her. Perhaps it was due to her beauty, but I wasn’t sure. It wasn’t a normal feeling; as if my wrists were tied to strings and she was in control of my direction. I was fixated on her. Her red lips complemented her pale, sparkling skin. It seemed that she was glistening, but maybe it was just the moonlight. I stopped in my place, stunned, when I noticed her eyes. They were an exquisite shade of green. Her pupils were fully dilated, almost cat-like. She had not taken her eyes off me except the slight look up and down my body. She kept my focus as I marched towards her. “I’ve been waiting for you,” she smiled.

“You have?” I questioned.

“Yes, of course. I’ve been waiting years for you.” She lifted her hand to my cheek. Her skin was cold and hard like marble, but calming. “You don’t remember me?” She looked disappointed.

“No, I’m sorry. Do I know you?” I managed to reply. This made her laugh.

“Of course, but you just don’t remember. Well this might make things more difficult, and certainly Amanrande will be dissatisfied. You do remember him don’t you?” I looked into her eyes, confused but lingering on every word she spoke. Did I know this woman? No, of course not. I certainly would have remembered someone like this, with such presence.

“No, I’m sorry, I don’t remember him. I’m actually quite sure that I don’t even know him.”

She drew in closer to me and our eyes locked for a moment as a warm wave passed through my body. Was I going insane? Questions flooded my mind. Just then, she leaned in and kissed me. A tingle went through my spine as I felt her cold lips against my own. She released me from her control and smiled.

“This will only hurt a little.”

I woke up the next morning in a panic. What happened last night? My mind in a frenzy, I quickly sat but my body felt like 100 needles were pressing down on me. A scream boomed from my chest. I looked down at my body and saw it pulsing, as if a thick burning solution was pumping through my veins. I looked around and saw a note on my bedside table.

Dear Aldon,

I am deeply sorry for any pain you may be feeling, but trust me you will be very grateful after it is through. You may wonder what happened to you last night. Shortly, you will become a vampire. This may come as a shock to you but this has been your destiny since you were a boy. Your father, Amanrande, is the king of our world, thus making you, the prince and the future heir. I am to be your wife, your queen. After the transformation is through, I will meet you in the Delano cemetery. Come alone, and welcome.

-Amaia

Suddenly, as if on cue, I felt a great seize through my body. All of my muscles contracted as a burning venom flew through my veins, causing great pain. From my toes to my head, my skin hardened, becoming marble like. I looked down to see my legs becoming more defined. The burning sensation then proceeded to my chest. This was when I noticed that my heart had stopped beating, and I lost it. I tried to get up, but this just made the toxins spread faster. My entire body was shaking out of control. The feeling was unbearable, and I was scared. Then, all of the sudden, it stopped. I stood up and walked to a mirror, feeling a sense of superiority. I stared at the mirror. Could that be me? My body was toned and shimmering. My lips were red and my eyes a dark green. I opened my mouth and saw perfectly sharpened fangs. I felt… amazing. As if I had amounted to my life long destiny. Remembering all I had learned from books and movies, I figured I’d have some super-natural powers, and I was not going to wait to test them out.

I bursted through my door, throwing it onto the ground. An elderly woman stood there shocked as I ran past her. She fell to the ground and let out a cry of help. I kept running until I reached the roof top. I had made it up five flights of stairs in a matter of seconds. This couldn’t be possible. I stood on the top of the building and took a few deep breaths. “I must be dead already,” I thought “So why not?” I ran as fast as I could to the end of the roof and jumped. Just as I expected, I landed on the next building. I let out a slight laugh. “Amazing.”

I spent the rest of my day testing out my new abilities. Running, jumping, my immense strength; it was all too good to be true. But the pit in my stomach only grew stronger. When night fell I made my way to the cemetery to meet Amaia. She stood elegantly near a staircase leading underground. “Hello dear, how was your first day?”

“Amazing,” I replied “I feel amazing, but hungry.”

“I thought so. Follow me.”

We proceeded down the staircase which seemed to disappear behind us. At the bottom was a grand hall holding what seemed to be a ceremony. A tall man with long white hair dressed in a ceremonial white robe walked towards me.

“That is Amanrande,” Amaia whispered.

I looked at him and he took my hands.

“My dear son, welcome home,” he said with such honest happiness. “Let the feast begin!”

ORP stanzas 1-10

Tally looks over at the neon, bubbly city.
Ugly for now, but soon she'll be pretty.
Yearning to see Peris, she makes a plan.
Best friends forever, claimed the scar on her hand.

When she lost one friend, she gained another.
Shay flew in and showed her how to hover.
A friendship, a bond; one to last forever,
But why did Shay see the operation with such terror?

For one last prank they traveled far
To the Rusty Ruins in the woods under stars,
A place unknown to all in the city,
The one escape from all that is conventionally pretty.

Shay sends a flare into the abandoned sky
For a mysterious man, but is it a lie?
Why would one choose to live out here?
Their life, becoming pretty, it would all dissapear.

One week until all will change,
But why is Shay acting so strange?
She was filled with resentment towards a long tradition,
But what could be so bad about the transition?

A day away, Shay's truth comes out.
She's planning to run away to an isolated whereabout.
They say their goodbyes but Shay leaves a key
"If you change your mind, come and find me."

Finally the operation, and Tally can't wait.
Though she wonders if leaving Shay is a mistake.
She waits impatiently for it all to change,
Then something happens that is so strange.

Tally meets Dr. Cable, who scares her a bit.
She says Shay was in a gang, and she had it with her tricks.
Unless she reveals her whereabouts, Tally will be ugly forever.
But Tally will keep Shay's secret through whatever.

Peris comes to Uglyville and Tally cracks.
She tells Dr.Cable she'll lay out the tracks.
But Dr.Cable wants more, eyes on the inside.
She must find The Smoke, or be ugly until she dies.

Tally begins her adventure to The Smoke.
But can she do it? Will she choke?
Tally decides to focus on the map,
But can't help but feeling she has put her friend in a trap.

Setting Exercise

Inside a Submarine:
I sat in the submarine at the bottom of the ocean. I had been training for this day practically my whole life, and this was it. It smelled of fish and I realized I would have to sustain it until I reached the surface, but I didn't mind. I looked out at the ocean floor. It was very dark, as if my vision had been altered over to black and white. The only light was that from my ship. Spread across the ocean floor was various vegetation. Fish of all sizes were slowly traversing the sand with only the slightest bit of movement. Seemingly greasy plants floated up and plateaued on the bottom of my ship. I could hear nothing but my own breath and heartbeat, which were elevating rapidly due to my excitement and anticipation. I couldn't believe that my wildest dreams had finally come true. As I looked down upon the ocean floor, knowing the mysteries it held, i heard a snap. It sounded sharp, much like the harsh snap of a bone. It echoed throughout the small ship and resonated in my ears. The next few moments seemed to pass in slow motion. The turn of my head to the aft. The hairs on my back of my neck rising. My heartbeat pounding in my chest as if a monster wanting to be unleashed. Part of the submarine had bursted and the ocean water was coming in fast. I ran to the back of the ship, my feet coming down hard and splashing on the ground. The sound of the water rushing into the ship was much like a storm pounding on the other side of the wall. I could feel the sweat on my brow drip down into my eyes and it burned. My hands were perspiring and trembling. I leaned to my left to grab the radio and it nearly slipped from my wet hands. "MAYDAY MAYDAY!" the words thrusting out of my throat as if it had been held in centuries. "WE'VE GOT A LEAK! I NEED SOMEONE DOWN HERE NOW." But nothing. The water was starting to reach my knees and it was so cold it burned. The feeling in my legs was going, as if they were being pressed between two giant blocks of ice, ready to burst. I fell to the ground and my face hit the ice-cold water as if hitting and shattering glass. I reached for something, anything to patch up the hole. The water was rising quick and I knew nothing I could do would stop it. The cold was over coming me and I realized even if I could patch up the leak, I would not have the strength to do so. I looked down at my feet and realized they were turning black, but by the time I looked back up, the water was beginning to rise over my head. All i could taste was the harsh lingerings of fish and ocean waste. All i could see was water taking over my ship, much like an infestation of a flesh eating bacteria. Everything was soiled. All of my notes, all of my belongings. Now from underwater I could see that the hole was becoming larger as scraps of metal from the ship were shooting off into the dark abyss of the ocean floor. I pushed my way to the top of the ship, gasping for my last precious breaths of air. I felt my nose touch the ceiling of the ship and breathed in as if golden air had filled my lungs. I sank to the bottom. By now my body had become completely numb to the painful cold of the water. I closed my eyes and felt the rush of water flow through my hair. I eased all of the tension in all my muscles. My knees unlocked, my arms stretched out, and i could feel nothing but the readiness in my body to let go. I was prepared, I had accepted my fate, I had accepted defeat. All i remember feeling was the warm touch of a divers hand reach down and pull me from the bottom of the submarine.
